Hi all
I've just bought a 66 Zephyr 6 which I'm told is an ex traffic car. It does have all the zips, centre speedo, etc, etc however I like to confirm if it is genuine. DVLA can't confirm due to the records being prior to 83.
Has been used for TV work over the last 10 years and does look the part and I'm told it is the real thing. Does need work which I'm intending to do.
Can anybody help as I'm sure you guys know the car. Reg is GKA394D
Please email me darrengilling@btinternet.com or text 07881 025154
Much appreciated

Cant help with the ID but from what you say it sounds like the real deal or someone has made it useing the real bits. Either way it sounds worthwhile, I used to have a gearbox from a Police Zephyr and I'm sure that it had different ratios to a Zodiac, made the car much more responsive.

This quote comes from an old Olyslager car manual - so you shoiuld have the Zodiac engine, alternator, etc.
Zephyr 6 Police car (available for Police and Government Departments only): with engine specification as for the Zodiac Saloon and general specification as for Zephyr 6, but with special equipment including: calibrated speedometer, alternator, nylon high-speed tyres, heavy duty suspension and wheels, reinforced front seats, factory-fitted wiring looms for police signs, etc.

Hi
Car does have upgraded suspension, 14 inch wheels, floor change gearbox, headlining zips, centre calibrated speedo etc. but I guess somebody could easily fit this to a standard car ?
Would there be a certain chassi number for Police spec ?

Both of the cars mentioned in this article are known to the club, and neither are the car that Darren is buying. There is also another Police Zephyr for sale on "Car & Classic" but there is some doubt as to whether this one is genuine. www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C359316

Be interesting to see if Darren’s and the one for sale are genuine. According to my old “Observer’s Book of Cars” the one for sale has a Bangor registration which ties up - an English county one would be quite suspicious. I may be wrong but I think the heavy duty wheels were stronger 13” ones – heavy duty wheels were available on other Ford models (usually export specification). 14” wheels were introduced a year or so in to Mk IV production along with radial tyres thus retaining the “rolling radius”.

I think Michaels right about the 14 inch wheels not being a mk3 fitting (nothing in the parts book about them)

Hi All
The saga continues. I'm awaiting to inspect the car when it arrives tomorrow, however it appears that Liverpool Police ordered a black Zephyr 6 in December 65 to replace a written off one. This was 3 days before D plate came in ( which mine is) but its not unusual for the home office to do this on their cars. So far it appears that the car they ordered is mine but I'm trying to confirm. It may also come to light that my car was a standard Z6 with floor change because the force couldnt get a traffic spec car from the factory ( maybe production had ended) therefore my car was added to the Police fleet and used for escort/VIP duty.
I'm going to check the vin plate and look at the police wiring to see if its factory or non standard.
Will keep plugging at this to find the whole story. also trying to load some pics

Hi All.
Car arrived today and it appears to be the real deal. The gear change has very small gates which is different from other Z6 floor changes i've had. There are 3 zips in the headling, centre calibrated speedo and the traditional speedo housing is blanked off with exception to 3 small guages. The Zodiac engine number matches the log book so i'm assuming its the factory unit ?
I'll try and post a picture

Interesting that the seats are not the standard late Zephyr seats and look more like the early ones, but arnt "heavy duty" seats one of the extras.
