I have been told that if you want overdrive it is not too difficult to fit Ford’s Type 9 5 speeder to a Z car. Has anyone done this?

Hi not too sure about fitting a type 9 but I do know that the input spline on a zodiac gearbox is the size/ spline count as a type 9. I have used RS2000 pressure plates in the past on previous cars when I struggled to get hold of a zodiac pressure plate. The only stumbling block I can see would be the bell housing, and obviously the gear stick if you still have a bench seat.

I was talkng to a guy at Gaydon who had fitted a type 9 into a mk3 (cant remember if it was a zephyr or Zodiac and I dont think he is on here) If I remember correctly it was quite straight forward but you need to buy the stuff and take the measurments to be sure.

The bell housing is the intriguing part surely the type 9 won't bolt up to a zodiac bellhousing ? be pretty cool if it did, I would be a little sceptical on re-drilling the bellhousing if it didn't bolt up.

if the gearstick will foul the seat try a transit box. the stick is on the side of the main box housing not the tail housing like car boxes.

I can't remember exactly what the guy said and I'm anoyed with myself for not paying more attention or taking notes. But he seemed adamant that it was an easy swap. I am going to look out for a spare type 9 box and take the measurements.

I remember having a good chat with this guy at Tatton park .... he got over the gearstick fouling problem by getting rid of the front bench seat. In fact he'd fitted the complete seat set from a mk4 and it looked really good.
Cant remember his name but he has been a long term owner and will probably be around at show time next year.
Keep an eye out for a maroon Zodiac with lotus wide steel wheels.

Sounds like the car, and the gearbox conversion, would make an interesting article for the magazine. I have searched the web but found nothing conclusive. From what I remember the Mk IV gearbox is the same as a Mk III one but I do not know if the bellhousing is the same. The reason for mentioning this is that a Mk I 2.5 Consul/Granada bellhousing apparently allows you to fit a type 9 box to the V6. The 3.0 used a different box. These are extemely rare but you can buy a bellhousing for £££££ from Burton Engineering:- www.burtonpower.com/aluminium-bellhousing-type-9-5-speed-gearbox-to-v6-essex-bh4a.html . The reference to Lotus wheels puzzles me as I thought they were 4 stud wheels.

Mk 4 manual gearbox is not the same as a mk3, the Mk 3 is the same box as early Transit and apparently was also used on the Scimiter and six cylinder Mustangs

Hi all i am new to this forum business but I Know how to fit Type 9 gearbox to Zephyr & Zodiac mk111. You use the MK11 zephyr bellhousing - Mk111 clutch & pressure plate. I am doing this conversion to my Mk111 Zodiac at the moment. I previously had a 4 speed box from a Mk11 Cortina fitted. You can buy an extension to place the gearlever further back if required. The only change is you have to file one stater bolt hole slightly.I hope this helps.

re the tandem master cylinder rally design do a wilwood dual circuit cylinder (with integral reservoir) that bolts right up to the stock mk3 servo. just open the bolt holes out to suit as they are 5/16" only and need to be 3/8" for the mk3 servo. i've fitted these to both mk3 and 4 zz's
