just joined the Club and hope to find a Mk111 to convert to use as long distance rally car, say London-Sydney. Have driven all over the world and last big event was the Peking to Paris in open Citroen. Fancied a Mk111 as they have reputation for being light, strong and easy to fix anywhere. Found a guy in Essex, name on my files somewhere who does Escorts and said could fix the suspensions on Mk111 to make the ride firmer. The fuel tank seems samll but otherwise I wonder why the MKs have not been used for these events before. Someone I have rallied with had a father who won the Montre Carlo rally in a Mk111 and Tim Riley whos son I know was a paid driver for Ford in the 50s and talks well about the car. Any views?

Ford rallied them in the early sixtys in the MonteCarlo, RAC and East African Safari, and the very same cars were also used in British Touring Car Championships! Loads of info about this in Graham Robsons Book (Ford Consul Zephyr Zodiac) Dont know what mods were done to the cars but they were prepared by Lincoln Cars. A few years ago I went with my brother to look at a Maroon Zodiac that had just completed a long distance (to the south of france I think Rally, car looked standard.

Opps - replied to your second thread earlier. I suspect they would have had export specification suspension as a minimum. Years ago I had a Mk IV Zephyr 6 and found some NOS export specification. Once I fitted it the car was transformed. If Ford had fitted it to UK cars they would never have received the criticism they did. I think they also fitted an additional anti-roll bar for tarmac rallies.
