I do not know how many bikers/ex-bikers are on the forum but imagine many took to the roads when you just needed a bike of 250cc or under, and a set of L plates...
I used to mainly frequent Lemsford Cafe (nr Welwyn Garden City), and further afield there was the Busy Bee (Watford) and the Ace.
The '59' Club is sixty years old this year (I am an armchair member). Various memorabilia is available through the Ace. I have the 60th Anniversary T-Shirt that I wear to cardio-rehab. Any other members on here...

I missed out on being able to ride a motorbike at sixteen, I think they changed the law when I was fifteen but I may be wrong, anyway although I was mad about motorbikes when I was young I never got into the super moped thing and by the time I was old enough to get a proper bike Amercan Graffitti had been and gone and the only way to go was a big pseudo yank (in my case a MK3 Z4). So I never got the Triumph Bonervill that I always wanted. Probably a good job as many of my older mates mangled to get themselves nicknames like "One armed Andy" "Peg leg Pete" "Stuart the Spaz" and "Wonky Steve" all because of bike accidents! You talking about the Busy Bee reminded me of an amusing incident. An old rocker told us that in the old days of the Busy Bee you would put a record on the jukebox and get on your bike ride up to and round the Dome Rounderbout and get back before the record finished. So back in about 1982 me and my mate Simon decided to hav a go at in in my old Vauxhall 2300. We went the where toe Busy Bee send to be (it was them calld the Beehve Motel) put a suitable early sixties song on the tape (I think we used "Terry" by Twinkle) and went for it. The attempt meant driving at 100 MPH and taking the roundabouts sideways in the old Voxbox but we couldn't do it. We then found that the extra roundabouts were not there in the old days......

The government tinkered continuously with motorcycle learner laws in the seventies/early eighties. They up'd the age from 16 - 17 in the early seventies allowing 16 year olds to ride mopeds. The sports moped was born - I had a Honda SS50. I see the odd sports moped (mainly Yamaha FS1E) at classic vehicle events. They then dropped the maximum capacity from 250 to 125cc and 10bhp. I thought they were actually harder to ride than a torquier 250. Now there are endless rules about cc and age but I haven't kept up to date.
Lemsford Cafe was more about a couple of people racing along the old A1 to the Bull Roundabout (outskirts of Welwyn Garden) and back. The Bull was demolished recently for more housing!
Two of my peers were seriously injured on motorcycles. Both sustained bad leg injuries after being hit in the side by cars (one was on the main road and the person sailed straight across from a side road). A few years later someone where I worked was more seriously injured and spent around a year in hospital. After a few years with a car he went back to a motorcycle - he just did not like cars!
