I don't know what the fuss is about, my Zodiac has been cutting out for years and I havnt heard a peep from Fords! Thinking about it my Mk II Consul was never recalled despite the wipers stopping go uphill or at speed. Good training for F1 in the wet but the offer from Ferrari ever came!

It’s a bit scary the thought of a car just expiring while on a dual carriageway or motorway leaving you with literally nothing including lights, my old Zodiac has misbehaved a few times in the 15 years I’ve owned it but nothing in this league and it’s just been a case of opening the bonnet and sorting it easily myself, it’s been the same with my Triumph 2000. I’ve owned a few older BMW’s as daily drivers, the last being a ‘94 325TD which was brilliant but I think BMW lost the plot about 10 years ago and the design and build quality has suffered badly, I’ve heard many horror stories of the evil 1 series and the recent BMW Diesel engines seem extremely fragile and prone to expensive failures.....

I know of one Rover 75 with a BMW diesel that has done 375,000! I think part of the issue is that they now try and get too much power out of diesels as there are also tails of diesel issues with Ford and Skoda amongst others. A friend of my father had a fin-tail Mercedes (220Seb I think). It clocked up over 250k utterly reliable miles in twenty years. He then imported a new one from Germany but only kept it around ten years as it had a few niggles. His last one had lost the build quality and reliability. I think part of the problem is that BMW and Mercedes try and cover all market sectors and have lost their core values in the process!
