Thinking of taking my wheels off and keeping them stored for major shows etc as they are newly painted and have original cross plys on but obviously are not the best drive ing experience.
Have been looking at some old school slot mags, wolf race etc but am unsure as to the size which is best suited to the steering box as I don't want to put too much strain on the box.
I'm fine with 6 or 7 inch for the rear but as most sets seem to come with all four wheels the same size me thinks 7 is too big for the front, I don't even know if they will foul the wings.
I've seen a nice set of 6 inch x 14.
What's the opinions out there?

I have 6x14 in front and 7x14 on rear, works very well with no fouling and not too heavy on the steering. 6x14 all round would be a good choice with 185 or 195 tyres. Same rolling radius as standard as well so gearing and speedo readings not affected

Thx joe, as the standard is 13 I thought the speedo would be out slightly for 14 ?

No because the standard tyres are 640.13 which is quite a tall profile. When Ford changed to Radials on the Mk4 they upped the wheel rims to 14 inch to compensate for the lower profile (which is why Mk3s look under tyred when fitted with most radials) It's the rolling radius that is important

If uprating the wheels be sure to buy a steering box bracket/brace from Chris on here. 01455 558219 His stuff is bang on and proper top guy.
Quality is second to none. The steering feels so much more precise and generally safer.
These old boxes get weak on the castings and two of my old Zodiacs had cracks in.....well worth checking!
Obviously the extra stress of big wheels can push them over the edge.
They are well below £50 to buy so well worth it.

No drilling is required. Simply remove the 3 bolts that clamp the box to the chassis, slide the brace over the bolts and refit the nuts. There is plenty of thread left and more than a full nut is gained once fitted. I will be in touch with Chris to post a few pictures.
Great, simple, well made solution to what is becoming a big problem.
