Hi to All, I’m getting on in years now but still have a great interest in cars, my vehicle over the last 12 years now has been a RANGE ROVER P38 and as you all know these modern day vehicles really keep you busy, I spent the whole of my working life as an Electrician and general builder, my trades cover plumbing, carpentry, electrical engineering, so with this knowledge I get by with most things.
Aha ! the Zephyr Mk 3 I remember it well it was my first decent car, mine was a Zephyr 4 colour grey and because of the colour I had it re-sprayed to a “Humber Bronze” but after six months all the paint started to craze it looked awful and was un-sellable so I decided to make it into something else, out came the engine and gearbox and in went a “Raymond Mays Zephyr six” engine with a Jag Gearbox and overdrive out came the bench seat and in went two ventura bucket seats electric windows were sourced from an American car and reworked into the door mechanism this work didn’t go with out it’s problems, the floor change on the Jag gear box ended up under the dash but I found that the Mk 9 Jag had an extension cover which bought it back to the right position, a centre consol was built housing seven dials, the engine I used had three SU carbs which stood to high for the bonnet so the hump from an “E type” was welded into the bonnet when all the work was finished I went back to the guy that had done the re-spray and for an agreed sum of £25.00 he re-sprayed the car pillar box red with matt black bonnet, the finished car was featured in “HOT CAR” Mag, and I still have the cup I was awarded by the Mag. Unfortunately the mag, and all photos I had of the car were lost when I move home in the 1970’s but I still have a “CASTROL” wall chart showing all the lubrication points and grades of oil and grease to use for the Zephyr 4, & 6, this measures 57.5cm x 44.5cm, and also the manuals for service and repair of the “LAYCOCK-DE NORMANVILLE Overdrive, Section “1” deals with working principles and notes on maintenance and fault finding.
Section “3” deals with dismantling inspecting and assembling ’A’ type overdrive
If anyone is interested in these items PM me.
