I've just been watching bits of "Tales from BBC Telivision Centre on the I player (it was on Thursday 9pm BBC4) there are some interesting shots of the early ZCars being made. My Dad used to work at TV Centre and when I was a kid going there was a real treat. I remember seeing the cars (or parts of cars) behind the scenes. What a lot of people dont know is that the cars used in the show were actualy yellow and not white. This was a because the shows were shot in black and white and yellow looks more like white than white does (a phographer might be able to explain better!)

Hi Joe, I watched that program Thursday evening, quite enjoyable. I seem to remember a few years back an article somewhere or other saying that the studio shots for Z cars being done with no windscreens in the cars to avoid reflections of the camera crew. The thing about yellow being used for white certainly rings a bell, I was told by someone in the advertising business once that in all the washing power adverts the 'before' was white and the 'after was yellow. Yeah, I definatly remember seeing the yellow cars, there were two or three and as you said they had no windows, and at the time (I was only 6 or 7 years old) I thought they were dumped scrap cars and Dad told me that they were in fact the Z cars. The show must have been a continuity nightmare as I belive the outdoor scenes were filmed on location somewhere up north and the indoor bits (and in car scenes) shot and broadcast live at TV Center.

Not about 'Z Cars'... but a friend of mine (panel beater/sprayer) told me they used to put 'a shot' of red into black cars - apparently this gave a deeper hue in black and white photos. ( Sable..??).
