does anyone have any tips on how to push some more power safely out of my 1700 ? Carbs Maybe ?
Just been testing the engine and is good, which means I won’t have the heart to replace it.

You can get tuning parts for them but they are even rarer than the six cylinder stuff. Look out on eBay and also Facebook groups. More parts were made to tune MK2 Consuls (which had basic ly the same engine but were made in much higher numbers that the Z4. A four branch manifold can be made up (expensive) and the cam can be reprofiled. A good start would be a twin choke Webber conversion (manifolds or adaptor plates are availiable or can be made up)

In the day it was reckoned a decent exhaust manifold was worth +20% on power. Besides what Joe has mentioned it is also worth matching the ports up. I did this as part of a decoke on my 4 so not sure if improvement was that it decoke but felt smoother at tick over...
