I was talking with someone yesterday evening. They do not get old cars bar the £100k+ Aston's, etc. Anyway he then said "Rather than pay lockup rent why don't you just get rid of it". Having owned it since 1985 and having a lot of memories I am rather attached to her. A year ago I had three classics; the Escort was sold and the Calibra stolen so the Zodiac is my only classic (unless you count the daily Jaguar as a future classic, and a number of boxes and a frame that constitute a Triumph motorcycle).
Anyone else been told they should get rid of their pride and joy?

I know exactly where you are coming from, I've got loads of nos stuff that would probably fit a lot of 60/70/80s mostly Ford's that was my dad's, sadly he passed away back in the summer and now I'm tasked with sorting out the numerous sheds etc, trouble is nothing is catalogued or the labels have fell off,so it's quite a job, needless to say he was a hoarder and so am I. Anyway, all I ever get from the "long haired corporal" is "what do you want all that old junk for?" or "why do you have to have old cars??", It's bl##dy annoying and anyway she's got her "5 year old Mitsubishi cz(seize up!!)", which to me is a characterless plastic fantastic limited vision eurobox, and all her pals are the same, they've all got new cars, new clothes, new furniture, new house, posh garden, no sheds,no garage, and a fantastic husband that's got a posh job and does everything!!! Rant over.... I'm going up the pub....by myself...😎

My whole life is full of old stuff. I have a shelf full of old (some very old books) boxes full of vinyl records, tapes &CDs (yep CDs are old now) I have three boats, all either very old or retro (1955, 1980 and 1999) My pushbike is a 1981 Raleigh with cow horn handlebars And the newest car we have is a 13 year old Audi (wife's daily) 15 year old Ford Ranger (my daily) and the 55 year old Zodiac. My house is 119 years old and some of the furniture in it is even older. Even my main PC is 10 year old and still runs on Windows XP My tool shed has stuff that used to belong to my dad (from when I was a kid) And I won't be getting rid of any of it any time soon....

I get told almost daily! Guess who?? There is a short 2 sketch drawing I saw recently, it has a young couple being quite intimate and she suggests he sells the Zodiac, they are near a cliff edge, needless to says the car doesn’t go over the cliff but she does.

Haven't had that one myself, to be fair I find most people who aren't into classics or even cars at all will concede that old cars are cool when you turn up in one on a summers day with the chrome gleaming etc.....however I do know two people who describe the series one Jaguar E-type as "ugly" so I guess there's no hope for them really (one drives a 2.0 diesel BMW in resale silver and the other an ASBO spec Focus RS in lurid green with an oppressively loud exhaust)
What I do get occasionally is "Haven't you finished that yet" or "You'll never finish that", always from the sort of person who couldn't wire a plug to save their life but watches plenty of car programmes on TV and so is an expert and knows that restoring a car is a piece of cake...….true car people who've been there of course appreciate how long things really take
Also get the "Fords are rubbish" thing to which I've now got a standard reply covering Model T, Lotus Cortina, Mustang, 155 GP wins, Transit vans, RS Escorts & Sierra Cosworths after which people seem to decide it's not worth arguing!!
What sort of condition is your Zodiac in Michael? Is there a plan to get her fixed up?

I have had from the younger generation some unexpected enthusiasm about mine. My 13 year old nephew who could take or leave my Corvette Stingray was busily taking photos and uploading them somewhere stating how cool my low rider was! My niece at the age of ten would not get out of it, wanted to just drive somewhere, anywhere, said “ When I’m 18 and passed my test, can I have this car?” And turning up at pub the first night of purchasing the car a 7 year old girl approached a small group of us and asked “ who’s beautiful car is that, it’s so beautiful!”

What sort of condition is your Zodiac in Michael? Is there a plan to get her fixed up? She was in continuous use from Easter 1985 (when purchased) for over twenty years. I broke my femur in 2008 and was unable to take her for the MOT. The problem is a temporary SORN often becomes long term. I did start her up and shuffle har back and forth for a couple of years but that stopped (think the battery died). She is solid but scabby around the door corners and sidelights. The other problem is I still have leg issues (back at hospital later in the week) so really need an autobox! Life can get complicated!
