Hi all, Another question to all. After receiving my new logbook for my new zodiac mk3 which was registered on the 01/01/1964 i noticed that it has a non transferable number plate. I know the reasons why most numbers are non transferable, however i have plenty of history with the car and having the original registration book for a ''mechanically propelled vechicle'' stating the same reg number which is on the car to this day. the number is a 3 number and 3 letter combination. unsure why this is. can anybody help... also everyone have a great christmas

I don't know why the number is non-transferable but a '64 car could easily have a 3 number / 3 letter combination, because in those days cars were registered with the local authority.
Although the year suffix letter "A" came in 1963, many authorities did not start using year suffix letters until 1964 or even 1965.

I was talking to a guy who had a car that had been off the road for some years... apparently back in the 80's you needed to send in your current logbook and get a 'new one'... Dvla were updating records and were removing old logs and registrations from their computers... I believe that if a vehicle was off the road and hadn't had its logbook 'exchanged' for a new one.... its reg & details were removed from the data base, im not 100% on that but i know a guy with a mk2 zephyr 6 that was parked up in the eary 70's and we dragged it out of it's resting place and he's restored it, hes got to take it to a dvla office to prove the vehicle's identity (All he has are 2-3 old tax discs and No Log Book) and 'Should' be able to keep it's original reg plate, but has been told that if he gets to keep the original plate..... It will be Non-Transferable... so mabe your car was off the road for a while.... Might not be the reason for yours being non-transferable, but it could possable... Hope that helps..... may-be someone else has other ideas... Thanks, Shane.

Thanks for that Eddie and Shane....
I bought the Zodiac of a very nice lady whos husband nought the car fromthe original one owner hotel owner from Ilfracombe in Devon.
She did mention the car was stored in a garage for sixteen year.....
That leads to the probability that what you said Shane would be right.
Im going to try and get written confirmation from the dvla stating the actual reason........
Kind regards
Andy

The 2nd & 3rd letters of the reg. no. show that your car was originally registered in Devon, which ties up with the original owner being in Ilfracombe.

I can confirm that all that Shane said is 100% correct ,I have no doubt at all as I was caught by D.V.L.A in exactly the way described,I had sent about 4 'log books' for cancelling and replacing with a V5 to get a reply that I was ONE DAY too late and to retain the numbers (on a non tranferrable basis) I would have to supply documentry evidence as to the authenticity of my claim to the registrations !!!
