The other day I got one of these Google pop-ups about a new Mustang inspired car. To me a Mustang will always be a two door coupe/hatchback with a burbling V8. But no this car uses all the latest trends - it is an electric powered SUV. Whilst I know that electric powered vehicles can have staggering performance such as the Tesla people carrier (0 - 60 in 3 seconds) this is nothing to do with the Mustang heritage! And it's name Mach-E...
What's it all about...

Hadn't heard of this e-mustang or whatever so checked it out - hideous!!
But then again I can't really say any mass produced car of the last 20 years or so is appealing to my eye, certainly the trend now is for overstyled blobs with weird 'frowning' headlights.....bring back tail fins and chrome
Is this Ford's first electric/hybrid effort? They seem to have played the waiting game compared to most others, although I thought they had announced they were more or less stopping making passenger cars in the US and were just going to do trucks plus Mustang and GT40
Don't know if anyone else is as sceptical as I am about electric cars but I just can't see how buying a brand new car can be in any way good for the planet even if it is electric.....surely the emissions from my 16yr old petrol Focus every year are nothing compared to building a car from scratch in an enormous factory using parts brought in from around the world on container ships that go about 3 inches on a gallon of crude oil? I get the localised pollution thing eg. in city centres but still.....
And although electric cars may have huge torque for these amazing acceleration times, it takes a lot of energy to accelerate a 3 ton lump of batteries and internet connectivity to 60 in 2.7856439 seconds so until the national grid is 100% wind/solar/tidal it's still bad for the environment as far as I can work out
Personally I think the 'greenest' option for motorised transport is the scooter, would solve congestion/parking problems as well leaving more road space for those with Zephyrs and Zodiacs!

Many will not like this but the 'Greenest' option for personal transport is repair upgrade what you have. A well tuned 60 year old car, running on petrol is less polluting than a modern electric vehicle. Electric vehicle are run ,at the moment, on subsidies, when other cars are put of the road by legal means (and misguided public opinion) there missing tax take will fall on the owners of the electric vehicles, they will not be so 'inexpensive ' to run then. They can be quick, but don't go far enough and take too long to charge ( admittedly that will improve) Anyway, that is a little time away, there is not the infrastructure to manufacture (battery materials being one concern or deal with their waste management) or power (recharge) a huge demand for these things.Perhaps in the future with 'Cold Fusion' and 'Zero Point Energy' they will work, maybe best hope the Hydrogen Fuel cell ? Keep you old car handy and mobile. Almost bought a 58 Caddy once, yellow, it was called 'Primrose' for some reason I bought a manual Corvette instead, lovely to look at, terrible to drive My Galaxie 500 choice would be from the late fifties, probably 58 Had a couple of Scooters , a stripped down Lamberti 175 that terrified me, it and me could not go around corners in an upright condition and a Vespa Lunar (remember those) bought when I was an apprentice in London, drove it home to my digs, parked up on the road, opened the side gate, went back for the scooter and it was gone, back to bikes after that ,my Mod days over!!

However even cynical old me is quite impressed by the new re-imagined Morris J-Type electric van www.morris-commercial.com/I think the stylist has done very well indeed - £60,000 though:

Yeah I can see the market though, Got to be aimed at the inner city antique dealers, Harrods etc, maybe some crepe or coffee vans...good luck to them. I never really liked them in the day as when i was a kidr an old bloke down the road had one and he was a bossy old git that kept telling us off!

Jez,a Cadbury van, have not seem one in years, last one was basis for a bonfire, they were mostly made of wood, so there ya go, fully 'green' made from trees and U2 powered (battery not the group) Very 'Gattaca' if you have not seen the movie, do so, worth it just to see all those electric Rover P6s driving around ( bet you they are all V8s with Scalextric sound tract dumbed over the burble ?) Hang on a minute, I have a Scalextric set, I'm off to the shed to find it.

There was an old J-Type where I worked many years ago. As I recall the (gearbox) gate was back to front - very confusing!
I am sure it will sell. Around Hertfordshire there are quite a few old Citroën vans. They seem very popular for selling coffee, bread and pastries, and flowers...
