hi all,
I've been thinking about lowering the suspension on my zephyr, could somebody give me advice on how to do this. I should get away with lowering blocks on the rear, its the front that is the problem, can I get away with just changing the springs if so what size and what lbs would I need.....

It all depends on how much you want to lower the car, an inch or so might be just springs but more than that you are going to upset the geometry of the whole front suspension.

thanks for the help guys,i only want to lower no more than an inch.i don't want to cut the springs I would prefer to get new ones,so can anyone tell me the size I need to do this....

You can get the whole TCAs, I got mine from John Blythe at Goldendays.

Hi Dan I lowered my front springs on my mk3 by 50 mm and the springs specialists (in Rotorua NZ) dont cut them, they compress to correct ht and retension them. According to them Geometry of Macpherson strut/steering is not affected much for this amount of change. Only done a few hundred km since so can only say have not noticed anything adverse at this stage - no scrubbing or excess wear. This small change (50 mm or less) also means suspension wont bottom out and springs are not going to be loose in their mountings. Heard one comment that springs done like this can revert back(up) to normal length but these guys said that was rubbish. cheers Graeme Oliver

HI I.ve just recieved a new pair of front coil springs for my mk2 zephyr,,,they will lower my zep by one inch, they are rated 140,,,rotherham springs,,,,cost me £84 including delivery they make springs for burton power,,,i spoke to tony staley who looked up the specs and calculated the size/rate etc,,,done a good job hope this helps,,

One of the first mods I did to my Zephyr was to lower the front......that's what kids do. I cut a coil and a bit off them, opened the struts, drained the oil, refilled with hypoid 90. Did the same to the back, as in refill the rear lever arm shocks with hypoid 90. The downside is that the ride gets a bit hard and you end up munching up the front bump stops. Lowering cars is never a good idea, but once you grow up , you figure it out. I'm going back to 1977 here...lol. I also got hold of an extra anti roll bar from a wreckers and made some (4)clamps to clamp it to the existing one, underneath.That stiffened it up for cornering. Later on I added some extra leaves to the rear suspension because they always end up sagging. It's not helped by having a missus that keeps on getting fatter and fatter. Moving forwards again, adding a V8 lowered the front even more, too much and I ended up getting hold of some proper but lower springs for the front and fitting them. I should have left the suspension alone, in regards to the height.

Looks like I might have to get a couple of extra leaves for my Zody, as mine is sagging, and it's definitely not helped by having a Missus that keeps on getting fatter and fatter!!!! She looks like Humpty-Dumpty sat behind the wheel of a 1991 Nissan Micra!!! (now I AM treading on thin ice!!)....Col...with a thick- ear!!

I won't make any reference to the gravitational force exerted by members of the fairer sex, as truth be known most of the opposite gender that are on this forum are probably making sufficient contributions in this area as well.
What I wanted to say was I think it is better to take the rear leaf springs off and have them re-profiled, i.e. bent back into the shape they were originally. I have had this done and thoroughly recommend it. Adding leaves or 'helper springs' actually changes the spring rate and makes the car behave differently. My car had been lowered and actually had 'helper springs' added which did little to raise the ride height. The car would bottom out quite regularly going over undulating surfaces found on some roads. I tried 'ironman' 'helper springs' but these didn't work either: the ride was very stiff and there also really wasn't enough increase in the ride height.
Bit of a job to remove the springs and refit them but it was worth the effort.

Yes gravitational lowering is not the way to go. They used to equate 1 cwt to a power loss of 3 - 5 bhp...
